Eric Seemann has planned his falls around the elk rut for decades. Based in northern BC, the professional wildlife photographer has easy access to some of the most productive elk rut territory in Canada, and he has spent years learning when and where the season peaks. He says the rut is one of the most compelling events in the wildlife photography calendar, and the Canadian Rockies are one of the best places in the country to be there for it. The Behaviour That Changes Everything
Elk are not particularly photogenic for most of the year. They graze, they move, they disappear into heavy cover. The rut changes all of that. Bulls are vocal, aggressive, and visible in ways they simply are not at any other time. They bugle to announce their presence, clash antlers with competing bulls, and move constantly through their territory. Cows are active and alert. Seemann says the whole herd dynamic shifts during the rut in ways that produce behaviour-driven images that are difficult to find at any other time of year. Getting that shot – a bull in creek mist at first light, bugling into cold air – comes to photographers who put in enough hours in the right places at the right time of year. After years spent living in these territories, Seemann knows exactly where those places are.
The Light That Fall Delivers
Summer in the Canadian Rockies is long, bright, and hard on wildlife photography. The sun is high by 7am, the light is flat by 8, and the best shooting window is over before most people have had breakfast. Fall compresses that window in a way that works in a photographer’s favour. The golden hours are longer, the light stays low and warm well into the morning, and the colour in the landscape gives every frame a depth that summer images rarely achieve. Seemann starts before 4 am on fall shooting days, a habit built over decades of working these territories from his base in northern BC. He says the window between predawn and mid-morning on a clear fall day in the Rockies produces light that is difficult to find at any other time of year.
The Landscapes That Frame the Season
The Canadian Rockies in fall are not the same place they are in July. The aspen and larch turn in ways that change the character of the light and the colour palette of every image. Snow arrives early on the high peaks; sometimes it dusts the valleys overnight and transforms familiar terrain into something that looks nothing like the summer brochure. What makes this season particularly productive for photographers like Seemann is the overlap of activity across multiple species. Bighorn sheep are moving through open terrain. Moose are active through their own rut. Grizzly bears are feeding heavily before denning, drawn to creek systems by the salmon runs. The Canadian Rockies in fall compress all of this into the same narrow window, set against one of the most visually striking landscapes in the country.
The Window That Closes Fast
The elk rut peaks across a narrow window in late September and early October, and the conditions that make it exceptional do not all align for long. Photographers who have tried to plan around it know that showing up a week late means missing the peak behaviour entirely. Seemann times his departures specifically around this window, drawing on decades of experience to read when the rut is peaking and where the most productive terrain will be. The window also coincides with late salmon runs that draw bears and eagles to creek systems. Few seasons anywhere in Canada pack this much wildlife activity, this quality of light, and this much photographic potential into the next few weeks, and Seemann has spent decades learning how to make the most of every one of them.
